About Us

ACH is a passionate group of native Costa Ricans and foreigners who are dedicated to the protection and conservation of the incredible ecosystem in Playa hermosa / Santa Teresa including its forests, rivers and ocean, and wildlife. The ACH is working towards the protection of all National Heritage lands (PNE), forested areas, maritime zones, and other governmentally protected areas to prevent them from being destroyed. Dedicated  to building a strong community that thrives with nature, not against it.

We help work with other local organizations and with the local government to ensure that our coastal lands stay healthy and all State Park Land stays protected. We work with our community towards a sustainable and healthy future for all its inhabitants.

Our Projects

1) Clean Ocean/River Fund -- Without a water treatment plant in a rapidly growing community, we have found our rivers and ocean polluted. This coastline has protected maritime waters in front of it with incredible bio diversity so not only are we polluting "our" waters that we drink and swim and surf in but also we are polluting a National ocean park. It is vital that we teach our community how to maintain their septic systems and provide assistance when needed.
a. Monthly River and ocean water monitoring and testing
b. Septic education, maintenance and upgrades with community members and developers/ architects/ contractors in the area
c. Funds to enable us to subsidize those who cannot afford to maintain or upgrade poor septic systems

2) Protecting the Forested Coastline which are State Protected Lands -- These forests protect our beaches, filter our water and are home to thousands of species of plants insects and animals.  Without these our shorelines would erode and our waters be even more polluted. We work with governmental organization to help define and protect these areas against anthropogenic invasion and abuse.

3) Community Spaces -- Open the designated public beach paths to ensure all community members have access to the beach , Create signage to mark State protected areas, wetlands and educate about the ecosystem, develop projects for community lands to provide much needed community spaces for gathering and education.
