The CRAFF Fly Fishing Education project has the goal of inspiring the next generation of fly fishers and conservationists. It is centered around our Peter Gorinsky Fly Fishing School.
The school features CRAFF members visiting underserved communities that have some level of connection to fishing. We bring kids and parents together with our CRAFF Ambassadors to learn about fly rods, fly tying, fly casting, fighting and netting fish and the importance of releasing those fish.
At the heart of this grass-roots effort is our motto, “El Pez es mi Amigo” or“ The Fish is my Friend”. It is our call to action for new fly fishers to education them about the importance of species preservation. Thanks to our donors, all participating kids receive a cap with this slogan!
Our CRAFF members teach young and old alike the ins-and-outs of our sport. We share our acquired knowledge about Costa Rica's more than 50 fish species, and we provide instruction on how to fly cast, what types of flies are used and where to fish.
In addition, we reinforce the importance of fishing licenses and defending nature against illegal fishing practices as well as against pollution. We make important connections between our sport, responsible angling and healthy ecosystems.
CRAFF members enjoy engaging with young people to help them build their self-esteem by learning the skills necessary to be a fly fisher. We also help them increase their environmental awareness and encourage them to become stewards of our natural world.
While conservation laws exist in Costa Rica, a lack of enforcement has compromised both species and habitat. CRAFF's Conservation Project seeks to contribute to species and habitat conservation with well-directed education and community involvement initiatives.
In past years, individual members and small groups of members have engaged with other local initiatives to promote a healthy environment. Obviously, catch-and-release fishing is a firm conservation message that is pervasive in all we do.
In coming months, CRAFF will integrate in a project in the Pacific called Sendero Pacifico, which is building a corridor along the Guacimal River from mountains to the Gulf of Nicoya. CRAFF will contribute to the community information package by providing specific fish species information to build out the educational materials for this important project. We are always on the lookout for other similar projects and are pleased to discuss and support them when feasible.
