La Huerta stands as a beacon of hope and transformation in the agricultural world, embodying the change we wish to see in how we cultivate our lands and nourish our communities.
As a 501(C3) nonprofit organization, we are deeply committed to supporting small farmers in their journey from chemical-laden monoculture practices to diverse, regenerative farming methods.
Our mission extends beyond mere agricultural reform; it is about creating a sustainable ecosystem where small landowners can prosper while nurturing the planet. By fostering alliances among these farmers, we aim to share resources in processing, sales, and marketing, thereby establishing a collective brand that symbolizes regional resilience and ecological stewardship.
Our initial endeavor on a 5-hectare plot in the hills outside San Mateo, Costa Rica, is just the beginning. Here, we are laying the groundwork for a model of agriculture that can inspire and be replicated globally, leveraging the collective wisdom and genetic diversity of plants from around the world to revolutionize farming as we know it.
The journey of La Huerta is divided into four strategic areas:
- Creating a model farm that showcases the best of permaculture and syntropic agriculture
- Establishing a genetic bank and nursery to preserve and propagate a vast array of plant species
- Launching a state-of-the-art food lab and processing facility to innovate in the creation of value-added products
- Providing comprehensive education on regenerative practices through our farm school and online platform, Ecoversity
Our efforts are already bearing fruit, with preparations underway for significant plantings and the development of infrastructure to support our educational and processing goals. As we embark on this ambitious path, we invite you to join us in this vital endeavor.
Your donation can help us dig wells, build essential facilities, and expand our nursery, directly contributing to a future where agriculture works in harmony with nature, supporting communities, and fostering a healthier planet for generations to come.
