Project Description

The David Kitson Library was donated to the Nosara community by expats and visitors in memory of David Kitson, a community activist. The library provides a unique opportunity for local people to check out books, use the internet on the computers, take math classes, and attend other activities. There are year-round English classes for all ages, an active Seniors Group, an educational group for mothers and young children, and many different reading groups.

The library was founded in 1996 in a classroom in a local school, but since then has constructed its own building in downtown Nosara.

Impact

- Over 15,000 visitors each year
- Over 16,000 books in the collection in English, Spanish, and German for children, teens, and adults
- Over 200 children and adults participate in the English classes each year.

New Initiatives

- Shadowing Program:  ESL high school students “shadow” local business leaders to learn about various employment opportunities in the community.
- Mobile Library:  Books are delivered and loaned to students at underserved schools in Santa Marta and Ostional.
