About Us

In Costa Rica, the great majority of mothers who give birth as teenagers or younger, do not declare who the father is. This means that these relationships are “inappropriate relationships”, relationships where the man is a lot older than the girl. Along with child marriage, this is against the law since 2017. Latin America, in general, has the second highest teen pregnancy rate in the world and it is the only region where pregnancies in girls under age 15 are increasing.

Soy Niña was founded to tackle these statistics, to empower under-resourced girls so that they can not only prevent an early pregnancy, but also break the cycle of poverty. We firmly believe in early intervention and prevention, as well as in the fight against gender inequality. Our goal is that the girls of Club Niña become empowered and confident, that they achieve their goals and reach their full potential. The program is continuous so the girls enter the program and remain throughout the years.

Our Program

We impact girls directly through our signature program, our “Club Niña” (Girls´ Club) and “Club Cole” (Girls´ Club for High School). Currently, we hold these programs in three different communities in the county of Desamparados, in the province of San José. Our long-term goal is to reach as many girls as possible throughout the country, especially in rural areas and our frontier with Panamá and Nicaragua.

Our Girls´ Club is a weekly, two-hour program, currently for girls in the first through ninth grades (ages 6-15). It is a safe space where we guide the girls through the process of positive self-image and self-esteem as well as a better understanding of healthy relationships.

The club is based on life-skills such as respect, critical thinking, empathy, and conflict resolution, among others. As an added experience, the club has special sessions that cover STEAM (Science, Engineering, Technology, Arts and Math), healthy lifestyles and environmental education.

We hope to count on the support of friends in the United States and around the world. All donations go directly to cover Girls´ Club expenses and all donations mean the world to us.  With your support, we can make sure that we continue having an impact on more than 170 girls and reach more girls next year, in 2024.

Testimonies

“It is very nice when I come to Club Niña because we make friends, we do very nice things like painting, move our bodies, dance, laugh, talk… I feel good, happy, I wish there were more days. I learned to love myself, to be respectful and to be careful.”
  – Jimena, 9
“I am very grateful to Soy Niña, for everything they teach me, for things that my mother could not learn. I own my body.”
   –Deishanny, 12
