Earlier this year, Karen and her children, Abbie and Ethan, visited Costa Rica. Despite their prior experience in travel - including multiple previous trips to Costa Rica - something special happened along the way during this most recent visit.
“It’s easy to go over and enjoy the luxuries,” explains Karen, “but because we’d enjoyed Costa Rica for so many years - maybe part of it was coming off of COVID and my work in health care - but it felt like we had the means to give back. That was the objective.”
“I started gathering info, and I came across the Amigos’ organization,” Karen shared. “I wanted to do an arts and crafts kind of project, especially with both of my kids coming from an artistic high school and being involved creatively. I started buying supplies and decided to put the idea out to see if anyone else wanted to contribute. I was blown away by the support. I had an Amazon wishlist and got packages at my door almost daily.”
The journey to get all of the amazing donations was not an easy one, but the payoff was immense.
Karen recounts, “We did not go straight to [Playa] Hermosa; we started in the mountainous region. The logistics of getting the supplies from one stop to another was arduous, but Creciendo Juntos helped out. It was so hot, but the kids were so gracious and wanted to give so much.” The trip and the efforts culminated in a beautiful moment: The takeaway came later that evening when we were walking on the beach and one boy started yelling at us because he recognized us,” she continues, “He started running over to give us a big hug.”
The experience that Karen and her kids shared has sparked interest in friends and family back home to want to help out in Costa Rica, and Karen hopes to facilitate even more donations in the future.
