MarViva Foundation, founded in 2002, is a regional, non-governmental, non-profit organization, with mission to impulse the conservation and sustainable use of marine and coastal ecosystems in the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP). Our strategic focus is: Marine Spatial Planning (MSP), market incentives for marine conservation and sustainable development, and prevention of marine pollution by single-use plastics.

Our multidisciplinary team is comprised of technical experts on Marine Biology, Environmental and Institutional Law, Geography, Marketing, Communications, Sociology, Business Administration and Project Management, Government and International Relations. Integrated through four complementing programs: Policy Advocacy, Communications, Science, and Sustainable Markets, MarViva advances initiatives in Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and the ETP:

  • Building capacities and facilitating multi-sectoral processes to improve the regulatory and institutional framework regarding human activities in the sea.
  • Providing technical and scientific support to diverse stakeholders, including governments, coastal communities, private sector and decision makers for the formulation and implementation of policy and activities for marine stewardship and sustainable development.
  • Facilitating the involvement of coastal and marine resource users and managers in analysis, planning, and decision-making.
  • Supporting the management and conservation of mangroves and Marine Protected Areas.
  • Promoting the development of responsible fishing and tourism, and market incentives to drive marine conservation and sustainability and integral coastal development.
  • Strengthening local capabilities and technical skills to enhance the effectiveness of regulations and voluntary measures for sustainable markets dynamics.-Promoting legal mechanisms and best practices against single-use plastic pollution.
  • Fostering the development and implementation of participatory governance in coastal and marine areas, and the high seas.
  • Raising awareness and calling to action multiple audiences and stakeholders.
  • Leveraging partnerships and collaboration between local and international organizations.
